100 years ago, 1910

Announcement has recently been made by the Maine Central Railroad that during the present year sheep and swine will be transported to and from the several state fairs free of all expense. This is quite a radical change in the arrangement for transportation of stock to fairs. For many years exhibitors of these two kinds of livestock have been obliged to pay charges one way, while horses and cattle have been carried both ways without expense.

50 years ago, 1960

Auburn firemen made quick work of a smouldering blaze at the vacated Koss Shoe Co. building on Hutchins Street yesterday afternoon before any serious damage was done.

Firemen held the fire to the one room of the ground floor on which it started, using booster lines from a pumper and  a two-and-a-half inch line.

Damage to the building was slight.

25 years ago 1985

RUMFORD — The Pine Tree baseball league standing became a tie at the top Sunday as Rumford downed Turner 5-0 at Hosmer field while West Paris was dividing a doubleheader with Sabattus. Rumford’s Dave Lafleur let down Turner with five hits at Hosmer and struck out nine while refusing to issue a walk.

Rumford goes back into action immediately at Auburn Monday.
