ANDOVER — Deb Cayer, riding Morning Son, took first place in the open adult division of the six-event Maine Versatility Trail Challenge Series hosted by Ellis River Riders.

The open adult division includes a series of obstacles that the horse and rider must maneuver that simulate challenges they may encounter on a trail ride. Included were obstacles such as a bridge, backing in a small space, dragging a log out of the way, ground tying, water crossing and trailer loading. There were 15 obstacles and challenges in all.

Horse and rider are judged as a team and scores are influenced by how the rider responds and encourages the horse when he is having difficulty performing the task he is asked to perform.

There was a good turnout for the event. Campsites and stalls were available by reservation for contestants who traveled a distance or just wanted to enjoy the ERR facilities on Airport Road.

The Feedbag food booth was open for breakfast and lunch and the bleachers were full of spectators who could watch the event free.
