LEWISTON — A Georgia man convicted of dealing crack and ecstasy out of various apartments here over a two-year period was sentenced Wednesday in federal court to life in prison.

Leonard Jones, 30, was found guilty following his trial in April of conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of crack cocaine, cocaine and ecstasy.

Prosecutors showed at trial that Jones brought the illicit drugs from Georgia to Lewiston between June 2006 and April 2008. Once in Maine, he would give money and drugs to local dealers and to addicts who helped him sell the drugs, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Portland.

Jones sold drugs from seven Lewiston apartments in different areas of the city. He sold multi-ounce amounts of cocaine and crack during at least 14 trips to Maine.

Jones had a record of three convictions on felony narcotic offenses. For that reason, he faced a mandatory life sentence in federal prison with possibility of release under federal law. U.S. District Judge George Z. Singal imposed the sentence.

U.S. Attorney Thomas Delahanty II praised the investigative efforts of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Lewiston Police Department, Maine State Police and the Central Maine Violent Crimes Task Force.
