Lewiston police officer Jason Johnson holds a cross Friday morning as members of the department listen to retired Lt. Don Mailhot, second from left, describe the day officer David Payne died in the line of duty on River Road in Lewiston. Payne was killed on July 23, 1988, when he was shot at this location. Mailhot was responding to a car accident with Payne when the death occurred. Johnson and officer Bill Rousseau organized the memorial service and the 7 mile run that followed. Officers from Lewiston, Auburn and the Maine State Police ran from the site of Payne’s slaying to Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn, where Payne’s grave is. “This isn’t for me,” Johnson said, “but for the officers who have fallen in the line of duty. I can run today. They can’t. This gives them a set of legs.” Johnson plans to make the memorial run an annual event.
