A new water line was installed on Pond Road between Grove Street and Sabattus Road. All of the domestic water lines were connected to every home. It was a very large project. There was a lot of material being removed, including parts of the old water main.

The big issue was dealing with safety. The truth of the matter was not only that the heat of the day was constantly more than 90 degrees, but the city employees in the hole had to work in the confines of a metal box, in which the heat often rose to almost 100 degrees. Some of the time, there was water and mud, which exacerbated the conditions.

Those men, who worked long hours every day on that project, worked very hard. No slowing down or going home due to the excessive heat. They must have used 30 pounds of rags to wipe the sweat from their eyes.

They certainly were a tight group, with great work ethics.

When I was in the Marine Corps., I would have been proud to have such a dedicated group of men working by my side.

I thank them for their dedication.
