CARTHAGE — New England Celtic Arts will host The Don Roy Ensemble with Franco performer Michele Choiniere on Sunday, Aug. 8, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center.
Roy is a champion fiddler with depth in many styles of fiddling. Hailing from roots deep in the Maritimes and Quebec, his musical passion lies with the French-Canadian tradition followed closely by Celtic music.
Roy has been a member of many successful groups, including bluegrass, Irish and French; and he directed the popular Maine French Fiddlers for its duration. He received fellowship awards for excellence in traditional music from the state of Maine in 1994 and 2001. His CD “Thanks for the Lift” earned a nomination for the National Heritage Award.
Cindy Roy, also a member of the former Maine French Fiddlers, is well known for her step dancing piano accompaniment. Augmented by her rhythmic feet, she adds enthusiasm to the music.
Jay Young, who plays upright bass with the ensemble, began playing folk music on a 12-string guitar in the 1960s. He slid into playing electric guitar in a blues band influenced by the Chicago blues style and then in a series of rock ‘n’ roll bands. In the 1970s, he started playing electric bass in a country band and upright bass with a church choir, and soon joined a bluegrass band.
Choiniere was born into a musical Franco-American family in northern Vermont and from an early age performed traditional Franco-American music with her father, Fabio, an accomplished harmonica player. In 1995, she began writing and composing her own songs and has performed to audiences throughout New England, Quebec and France. Her lyrics and music focus on nature, romance and social issues connected to Franco-Americans.
Choiniere has been featured on TV5 International’s “Visions d’Amerique” as well as on Vermont Public Television’s “Rural Delivery,” and has recorded an archival family collection of Franco-American music with her father. She is featured on the Smithsonian Folkways CD “Mademoiselle Voulez-Vous Danser: Franco-American music from the New England Borderlands,” released in 1999.
She is a recognized “master artist,” having been awarded the prestigious and competitive Governor’s Heritage Award in 2007. She is also a member of the Vermont Arts Council’s American Masterpieces program, as well as a juried Arts Council performer and teaching artist.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. A preshow jam will start at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. Call 562-4445. Skye Theater is at 2 Highland Drive.
