AUBURN — Mechanics Savings Bank recently awarded four $1,000 Banking on the Future Scholarships to 2010 Lewiston High School graduates Megan D. Beliveau, Jennifer M. Bergeron, Michelle M. Caron and Jill K. St. Laurent.
Beliveau is the daughter of Rene and Pamella Beliveau. She was a member of the Lewiston High School art club, cribbage club, National Honor Society and the field hockey, tennis and swim teams.
She received the Scholastic Gold Key Award for sculpture, the Scholastic Honorable Mention for painting, the field hockey coach’s award, and the swim team Mulholland Award. She also served as the yearbook publishing editor-in-chief.
Beliveau volunteered at Operation Breaking Stereotypes and Catholic Youth Ministry of Maine and attended two summer leadership institutes. She plans to attend Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada, to major in community development/recreation management.
Bergeron, daughter of Raymond and Kathleen Bergeron, participated in the LHS strings orchestra, women’s chorale, executive board and math team. She was member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, the cross country team, serving as captain for three years; swim team of which she was captain her senior year; and outdoor track team, named captain her senior year.
Bergeron is a recipient of the Lewiston Shining Star Award, the Maine Principal’s Award and the Cornell Book Award. She volunteered as a figure skating coach at the Auburn Recreational Department and as a swim coach at the Special Olympics and participated in numerous service projects through Venturing and Girl Scouts. Bergeron will attend Bates College to study pre-med.
Caron is the daughter of Luc and Denise Caron of Lewiston. She was a member of the LHS National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and L-Club. She received the 2009 Mount Holyoke Book Award and the 2007 Potential Class “A” Best Award for softball. Caron played soccer for three years and varsity softball for four years, serving as team captain in 2010. In 2009 and 2010, she was the boy’s varsity basketball team manager.
She volunteered for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boy Scouts, Special Olympics and Lever’s Daycare Center. Caron will attend the University of Maine at Farmington to major in elementary education.
St. Laurent is the daughter of Gary and Doreen St. Laurent. She is a recipient of the Saint Michael’s College Book Award and the 2009 All-Academic Soccer Award. She served on the LHS executive board and prom committee and was ninth-grade class president. She was a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, environmental club, Blue Crew, Peak Performance, L-Club and soccer and lacrosse teams.
St. Laurent volunteered at Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Special Olympics, Lewiston Recreation Department, Middle School Lacrosse Clinic and the Dempsey Challenge. She plans to attend Bentley University in Waltham, Mass., to major in marketing.
For more than 20 years, Mechanics Savings Bank has provided scholarships to assist high school graduates with their higher education goals. The 2010 Banking on the Future Scholarship program awarded $1,000 to 13 high school graduates at nine area high schools this year.
