BUCKFIELD — The Community Theater Group will present the musical “Godspell” at the Oddfellow Theater next month.

The show is being directed by Buckfield Junior-Senior High School band and drama coach Ethan Wright, and will be presented at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 and 14, and at 2 p.m. Aug. 15.

Wright decided it would be a good idea to start a theater group in the summer when community members can participate.

He said “Godspell” had always been a favorite of his, but it would be difficult to put on at the high school because it requires mature actors.

Wright, who grew up in York, said his drama coach in high school did a similar thing in the summer that was called the Sanford Maine Stage.

He talked to Rossie Kyllonen, who had helped him with his high school productions, and she agreed to produce the community show.

“She’s been amazing,” Wright said.

Megan Andrews-Wright, Ethan’s wife, will accompany the show on one keyboard, and Ethan’s brother Joe Wright, who is the band director at Andover (Mass.) High School, will play a second keyboard. There will also be drums and two guitars.

Ethan Wright said 16 people auditioned for the 12 roles.

“Godspell” is a musical story of Christ in a modern setting. Christ, who is portrayed as a modern superman with no beard, teaches the community from the Bible.

“The true message deals with the community’s strengths and weaknesses and how people deal with those situations,” Ethan Wright said.

He said he hopes ticket sales will pay for the cost of the rights to put on the show, which is $1,400. Tickets go on sale at Tilton’s Market on Monday, Aug. 2. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for seniors.

Cast members of the Buckfield Community Theater Group rehearsing for the musical “Godspell” are, from left, front, Hannah Perry, Karinna Merrill, Cameron Allen who portrays Jesus, and Hillary Perry. In the second row, Sierra Wescott, Donovan Hemingway, Gabby Valley. In back are Jed Allen, who portrays Judas, Dennis Twitchell, Chad Allen and Kasey Robertson.
