LEWISTON — Sally Grumman Root of Houston, Texas, and Weld, passed away on Monday, July 26, at Central Maine Medical Center, after a brief illness.
She was the daughter of the late Thomas Waldo and Amy Susan (Child) Grumman of Fairfield, Conn., and as a child, spent summers at her grandparent’s Cob Webb Camp on Webb Lake in Weld. She graduated from Drew Seminary, Mt. Carmel, N.Y., and continued her education at Edgewood Park Junior College in New Jersey. On Sept. 16, 1961, she married James Witker Root in Fairfield.
She was a devoted wife and mother who put her family first and gave compassionately in her volunteer efforts as a floor host at M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. She was also a member of the Junior Leagues of Fairfield and Houston and was a member of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas, for 38 years.
An avid tennis player, she was nationally ranked in the senior women’s division of the United States Tennis Association. She enjoyed knitting, reading, playing bridge and challenging her beloved grandchildren to many ping pong games. She will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.
Sally is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jim of Houston, Texas, and Weld; their daughter, Amy Root Littlefield of Bowie, Md.; son, James Witker Root Jr. of Georgetown, Texas; son-in-law, Roy Everett Littlefield III and daughter-in-law, Courtney Hill Root; grandchildren, Roy Everett Littlefield IV, Christy Louise Littlefield, Leah Littlefield Webster, Haley Raymond Root and Sterling James Root.; a sister, Jane Grumman Elias and her husband, William, of Atlanta, Ga.; and nieces and nephews.
