LEWISTON — The 2010 recipient of the Madeleine D. Giguere Scholarship at University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College has been announced. Kessi Watters Kimball, an arts and humanities major at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College, received an award of $1,000.

The scholarship is named for Professor Madeleine D. Giguere and is given by the Franco American Collection board of directors. Board member Maureen Perry presented the scholarship to Watters Kimball during the USM LAC graduation and recognition ceremony in May.

“The establishment and growth of the Franco-American Collection at USM LAC is due in large part to Professor Giguere’s efforts,” said Perry. “This scholarship is a fitting memorial to her life’s work.”

The collection awards up to three $1,000 scholarships each year. To be eligible a student must be enrolled in a degree program at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College, demonstrate an interest in French North American studies and/or in the local Franco-American community and maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.

The collection is one of the largest repositories of Franco-American archival material in Maine. It is located on USM’s Lewiston-Auburn campus, 51 Westminster St. Hours of operation and more information are available online at www.usm.maine.edu/lac/franco/ or by calling 753-6545.
