LEWISTON — Muriel Ruth Pratt was born on June 25, 1920, in Livermore, at the home of her great-grandmother, Nettie House, to parents Eva Myrtle Houston, a homemaker, and Albro Chester Pratt, a carpenter. Nicknamed “Midge” by her family, she was the oldest girl of 17 children. While small in stature, Midge had an open heart and endless supply of love to give.
Midge met the man she would marry, Clarence Carl Haynes, while roller-skating in Lewiston in 1941. With self-deprecating humor and an ageless giggle, she related a memory of that autumn day: “I’m going to mop up the floor, I know I am.” Only a few months later, on March 15, 1942, Clarence and Midge married and began their life together — a life in which they shared five children and more than 55 years of marriage.
Once married, Midge lived a few years in Auburn; eight years in Roxbury; three years on Erchles Street in Rumford; many years on Clachan Place, in Rumford, until her children were grown; then many more years in both Peru and Buckfield, near family. Midge’s large family was her greatest joy; she delighted in welcoming each new addition.
One might think that with so many brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and with her own five children, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, there would surely be little love left for each one. In fact, the opposite proved true. Midge’s love for her family only grew as the years went on and numbers swelled. She loved each individually and entirely, with a completeness that was written clearly on her face and could be felt in every touch.
On July 29, 2010, surrounded by the family she loved above all else, Midge’s journey in this life came to an end. Rest in peace, Muriel Pratt Haynes, knowing that your presence on earth has touched innumerable lives — your memory and our love for you will live on.
Midge is survived by sisters Nancy Stuart, Sandra MacDiarmid, Gladys Lamare, Beverly Rawson, Glennice Cline and Dorothy Merrill; daughters, Barbara Ellis and husband, Steven, of Windham, and Dorothy Damon and husband, John, of Buckfield; sons, Scott Haynes of Lewiston, and Stanley Haynes and wife, Myrna, of Peru; grandchildren, Christel, Carey, Todd, Wendy, Jeffrey, Heidi, Jessica, Jodi, Angela, Jennifer, Michael, Christopher and Lindsay; great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Brandi, Amber, Erika, Max, Seth, Ashley, Hunter, Rayne, Ruby, Jade, Jack, Eleanor Muriel, Brooke, Olivia, Gavin and Jacob; and great-great-grandchildren, Kadence, Caeleb, Jaidyn and Damien.
