FARMINGTON — Crops at the Hope Harvest Garden are coming in early and plentiful, organizer Eileen Liddy said Monday.
The 40- by 120- foot plot on the property of Franklin Memorial Hospital provides produce for area food cupboard. Volunteers are needed to help harvest the crops, she said Monday. Harvesting takes place from 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Volunteers to weed are welcome at other times.
It’s been a great year so far with green, yellow and purple beans ready to pick along with some tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, carrots, beet greens and broccoli, Liddy said. No potatoes or corn are grown.
While so far the garden has produced fresh veggies for the Farmington, Wilton and Livermore Falls food cupboards, Liddy is looking at ways to get the vegetables to other area towns, including Phillips, Rangeley, Carthage and Industry.
Liddy and Barbara Marshall involve people in helping with the gardening project.
“Not only are we able to teach people (volunteers) about gardening, but we’ve learned so much,” Liddy said.
