FALMOUTH — The Maine State Ballet will present “The Firebird,” which premiered at the Paris Opera on June 25, 1910, and features a score composed by Igor Stravinsky that is considered to be his breakthrough piece.
Elizabeth Dragoni, 18, of Scarborough, a featured soloist in numerous Maine State Ballet productions, will dance the principal role in the company’s presentation on Aug. 6, 7, 13 and 14. Dragoni is perhaps best known to audiences for her ethereal portrayal of Clara in “The Nutcracker” over the past four years.
In “The Firebird” Prince Ivan sees the Firebird as she dances in a mysterious garden. He captures the bird and then reluctantly agrees to set her free. In gratitude, the Firebird gives Ivan one of her feathers and promises to return to him in his hour of need.
“The Firebird” will be presented at 7 p.m. along with “Bach Concerti,” a premiere work by Maine State Ballet Artistic Director Linda MacArthur Miele, a former member of the New York City Ballet and student of Balanchine.
Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors and children under 12. Call 781-7672 or visit www.mainestateballet.org. The Maine State Ballet Theater is at 348 U.S. Route 1.
