AUBURN — The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA will offer “Couch to 5K” and “5K to 10K” training programs beginning Tuesday, Aug. 10.

The Couch to 5K program is an introduction to getting the body moving, starting off alternating between walking and running short distances and slowly building up until after eight weeks, participants will be ready to do a 5K (3.1 miles) nonstop.

Anyone who has competed in a 5K and would like to run a 10K, may sign up for the 5K to 10K program, which is geared toward a step up in mileage and intensity.

Participants will train with others and can set a goal of competing in the 5K or 10K at the Dempsey Challenge the weekend of Oct. 2 and 3. Runners in both programs will meet together, but train separately.

Meetings will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, for eight weeks, beginning Aug. 10. The first class will meet at the YMCA and each class thereafter will meet at the Festival Plaza on Main Street. Fees are $25 for YMCA members and $55 for nonmembers.

To register, stop by the Auburn-Lewiston YMCA, 62 Turner St. For more information, visit www.alymca.org, call 795-4095 or e-mail Tish Caldwell, wellness director, at [email protected].
