MANCHESTER — Henry Alrick Carlson, longtime resident of Winthrop, now of Manchester, died peacefully on Aug. 4 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

He was born in Monson, a son of Louisa Degalund Carlson and Hjalmar Carlson, who were Swedish immigrants. He was the youngest of four children, the two oldest of which were born in Sweden. As he well might be, Henry was proud of this Swedish heritage.

Educated in Monson’s public schools, when World War II broke out, he left the town to work in a defense plant. While he could have been deferred from military service, he opted to enlist in the United States Marine Corps on Dec. 7, 1942. He was assigned to a Marine Air Wing where he ultimately was a sergeant and crew chief for a two seater SBD dive bomber performing ground and flight duty in the South Pacific. Upon completion of military duty, he returned to Maine, settling in Winthrop and operating a garage and bus business with his two brothers, Gordon and George. From there, he moved into the study of insurance under the GI Bill. He founded his successful insurance and real estate business. Major illness led to the sale of this business in 1984. He continued to remain occupied upon recovery, managing his own properties and building a home, “Lower Lights” on the Atlantic Ocean in New Harbor.

He is a member of the Winthrop United Methodist Church, a member of the Masonic Lodge and of the American Legion. He was an outdoorsman and a sport. He hunted, skied, fished and boated, participating in these and any other activity with vim and vigor.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lottie Randlette Carlson, and by his close friends, brother-in-law Joseph Palleschi and Greg Hall, and by the adoring Flanders, his black Lab, who watched over him always.

Beloved and close were nieces and nephews, George Cilley (Frances) of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Diana Cilley Lucek (Emil) of Tolland, Conn., Helen Carlson Bourget (Arthur) of Plymouth, Betty Carlson Parsons (Linwood) of Millinocket, Ann Frink of Westerly, R.I., Stephen Carlson (Cathy) of Monson and Susan Carlson Sarto (Richard) of Hermon. Over the years, much time was spent with these nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by his parents and by his three siblings, Gertrude Carlson Cilley, Gordon Carlson and George Carlson.
