PORTLAND — Henry J. Aliberti Sr., 95, died on Aug. 3.
He was born on Dec. 11, 1914, in Portland, the son of Antonio and Rosina Aliberti. When his father died of an illness at a relatively young age, his mother raised him and his seven brothers and sisters. Each of the children helped each other through college and business careers.
These values were, in turn, passed down to his own children. He was a dedicated father who provided all his children with the opportunity of a higher education because he felt so strongly about its importance. He made it clear to each and every one of his children that nothing was more important than education, their work ethic and their value to each other as a family. He loved them all equally and unconditionally.
He was educated in the Portland school system and graduated from Portland High School. He entered the University of Maine at Orono with the Class of 1938, where he earned a degree in civil engineering. He initially worked for the Maine Central Railroad designing railroad trestles. He was the first city engineer for Lewiston. After gaining this work experience, he and two partners founded the well-known and respected engineering firm Aliberti, Larochelle and Hudson. The company designed and managed the construction of supermarkets, bands and housing developments. Under his leadership the company became a premier engineering firm in Maine. When he retired in 1963, he was “roasted” with a great deal of affection by his professional peers and friends in the community of Lewiston. He was valued by clients for the personal attention he gave to work underway, even if it meant sloshing through mud in a suit and brown Fedora hat.
He demonstrated the same dedication and steadfast loyalty to his family. He and his wife, Anne, had a friendship and love shared during 70 years of companionship. As young children, his five girls and son could always go to both for comfort, protection and direction and knew they would receive it.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and attended Mass every week. He was a past member of the Brotherhood of Elks. He enjoyed vacationing in Florida, golfing and was an expert crossword and jigsaw puzzle maker.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Profenno; six children, Roseanne Dumond, Barbara Aliberti, Marie Nichols, Sandy Anestis, Henry Aliberti Jr. and Florence Kelly; a sister, Viola Aliberti; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He loved to sing to his children and tease his grandchildren. He will be remembered as being a devoted husband, father and grandfather who was generous of heart.
