DEAR SUN SPOTS: A few weeks ago you had an article in your column about a group that accepts used computers, fixes them and gives them to folks who need them. I am cleaning out my house in order to sell it and have a computer I would donate.

Can you please give me the name of that group and a contact phone or e-mail address? Thank you. — Dorothy Nickerson, gdnickerson2@gmail.com

ANSWER: Reporter Bonnie Washuk wrote a story about the Lewiston Regional Technical Center at Lewiston High School, where students fix up old computers and donate them to needy families at Longley Elementary School. You can read that story at www.sunjournal.com/city/story/859557.

Teacher Crystal Morris will be accepting donated computers for classes this fall. Students can upgrade the computers if they run Windows 98 or a newer operating system. Morris said that anything older than a Windows 98 machine is really too old.

To contact Morris, call 795-4144, ext. 2334, or e-mail cmorris@lewistonpublicschools.org.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Is there anywhere nearby that I can purchase dry ice? — Gloria Poulin, Livermore

ANSWER: Sun Spots didn’t find a supplier in the Lewiston-Auburn. She did find two on the Internet:

• Elm Ice Co., 56 Gray Road, Falmouth, 797-5691

• Getchell Bros. Inc., 1 Union St., Brewer, 989-7335

DEAR SUN SPOTS: About a decade ago the paper used to have a column about neat places to go in Maine. I remember an article in the paper about Indian carvings or glyphs in the stone that could be seen by the edge of the river and gave directions. I think it was on the Androscoggin up north. I was trying to find out how to locate the article. — Dave via e-mail auburnm787@aol.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots wasn’t able to find the story you wanted on the Sun Journal website (probably a bit too old), but she did find the glyphs mentioned in a book on Google books. In “Picture Rocks: American Indian Rock Art in the Northeast Woodlands” by Edward J. Lenik, it says there are petroglyphs at the Kennebec River at Embden and at Birch Point, Holmes Point and Hog Island on Machias Bay.

She also found a site (http://tinyurl.com/36dmdc5) describing how the University of Maine at Machiasport “… set out to capture a digital map of an existing paper survey of actual Passamaquoddy petroglyphs located in Machiasport, Maine. A digitizing table was used to trace each individual petroglyph illustration in order to create a layer of digital sketches, which appear at scale on the digital map.”

A documentary about the petroglyphs, made with support from the Passamaquoddy Tribe, can be purchased at www.filmbaby.com/films/163. There is a two-minute clip from the film online that offers some details on the Machiasport glyphs.

You should be able to obtain additional information about the petroglyphs from the Maine State Museum in Augusta. You can visit www.mainestatemuseum.org or call 287-2301.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: A year or more ago Sun Spots printed a procedure to inquire about past employment benefits for retired employees. I meant to keep the article for reference but have lost it. Could you please give us a repeat of this useful information? Thank you. — J.K., Litchfield.

ANSWER: What kind of benefits? Sun Spots searched, but without something more specific to look for, nothing pops up. Normally you’d contact your previous employer about benefits, or possibly the union if you were represented by one.
