BUCKFIELD — Thursday’s rain was the heaviest rain known here for years. Not since the famous “Pumpkin Freshet” 40 years ago has there been such a rainfall in 24 hours. Although it probably did more good than harm much damage was done to the highways. Two bridges were carried away and in some places the hard roadbed was washed out and roads were closed to public travel.

A sprinkler system installation at Frye School has been started by the Public Works Department.
The PWD is in the process of installing a new six-inch water line to serve the sprinkler system. The line will run from Horton Street across the school yard and into the building. Installation of the sprinkler gear will follow.
The overall project is expected to cost in the neighborhood of $7,300.

Auto dealers in Lewiston-Auburn have not received any new cars or trucks in the 12 days of the Teamsters car haulers’ strike nationally, but dealers here say they have enough cars and trucks on hand to get them through the strike of just a few weeks.
And regardless of the outcome of the truckers strike that has had 20,000 car carrier drivers on picket lines since July 26, the five Auburn car dealers said they doubt the strike will affect prices of cars and trucks, even though supplies may dwindle soon for some dealers.
