HOLLIS — George O. Gerrish, 63, of Hollis, died on Aug. 7, at the Maine Medical Center after an extended illness.

He was born and raised in Bryant Pond and will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

He served four years in the U.S. Navy and served one of those years on a riverboat in Vietnam. For 28 years, he happily worked at Maine Medical Center where he was known for his friendly smile, telling jokes and his “gift of gab.”

George loved his country, all dogs and baseball, especially the Yankees. One of the happiest times of his life in recent years was taking a bus trip in 2009 to attend two games at Yankee Stadium.

He served many years as a Commander of the Gorham Memorial Post 10879 of the VFW and was committed to participating yearly in the Memorial Day parade and ceremony in Gorham. George also belonged to the Bar Mills Community Church where he served on the grounds committee, deaconate and sang in the choir.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jane (Boyle) Gerrish, of Hollis; daughter, Jennifer Russell of Hollis; sister, Evon Soule of Mexico; granddaughter, Abigail Jane Russell of Hollis; stepson, Paul Nibur of Alaska; nephews, Glen Holmes of Buckfield and Gregory Holmes of San Francisco; and niece, Darlene Killion of Massachusetts.

The Gerrish family would like to thank Jeanne, Rachel and Andrew and other special care nurses at the Maine Medical Center for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
