LEWISTON — Officials reported Sunday that a Friday fire in Lewiston that left a man hospitalized is believed to be the work of an arsonist.
WGME-13 reported Sunday night that investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office said the blaze at 92 College St. was deliberately set. Officials with the Lewiston Fire Department said Saturday that the fire started just before midnight on the back porch of the building and quickly spread to the third floor.
Two men were pulled from the first-floor apartment by rescue crews. One of the men, 54-year-old Jack Barry, was at Central Maine Medical Center, where he has been listed in critical condition, according to Barry’s sister.
Officials described 92 College St. as three apartments that are connected to 94 College St., a rooming house with seven units, by shared gas and power. The building is uninhabitable, and the damage is estimated at $100,000. Police are continuing their investigation into the blaze.
