A state-mandated notice inserted in Lewiston’s 1985 tax bills has resulted in dozens of phone calls to city officials from taxpayers confused about what the notice means.

Treasurer/Tax Collector Paul R. Labrecque said Thursday the city mailed out 11,323 bills for real estate taxes on Tuesday that included a notice that explains that without state support, property tax bills would be 28 percent higher.

Labrecque said the notification requirement was enacted by the 111th Legislature in 1984. He said the law’s sponsors wanted to provide a way for taxpayers to be made aware of the effect state funds received by their municipality have on the property tax burden.
