AUBURN — Crews will close Academy Street between Main and High Street for the day Wednesday, detouring traffic around Elm Street.

Tracey Steuber, Auburn community specialist, said the detour is part of the Main Street construction and improvement project scheduled through November.

“They were looking at how much traffic comes from Academy and just needed to close it for a while to make some room,” she said. “New Auburn traffic will be able to continue, but it will have to continue on up to Elm Street.”

The detour is only scheduled to last one day.

The work is part of the overall street-scape improvements for Main Street. Crews repaved and rebuilt the road between Court and Academy street in 2009, adding new curbs, narrowing the road and building grassy esplanades  in places.

The same kind of changes are in store for the southern stretch. The city is adding a grassy esplanade to the northern sidewalk and installing new street lights along the road.

Main Street traffic won’t be detoured and lanes won’t be closed during most of the work, but lanes will be shifted and there will be flaggers and traffic controls on-site for the duration of the work. Area businesses are scheduled to remain open.
