RANGELEY — The Rangeley Public Library has announced that two-time Freestyle Frisbee Champion Todd Brodeur will host a trick Frisbee show and interactive playshop at the Rangeley Public Library from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12.

If the weather is not good on that day, the show will take place at the Rangeley Lakes Regional School on Mendolia Road.

During the high energy 30- to 45-minute Frisbee show, Brodeur will demonstrate basic Frisbee tricks, catches and combinations. He will show a number of rare and unique Frisbees along with his stories and messages. The program will also include a brief science lesson on the aerodynamics of Frisbees and a bit of history about tossing circular objects.

The show will be followed by a playshop, a hands-on activity that will give participants a unique learning experience. It will start with balancing and stretching and will lead to many tricks and catches that can be done with a Frisbee.

Brodeur lives in Massachusetts and has been playing Frisbee since he was a child. He’s been seriously involved in all aspects of the sport for more than 30 years. He started out tossing Frisbees with friends and family in the backyard and progressed to playing long toss in a large open field with friends.

His uncle, Gary Brodeur, was influential in his life and taught him many throws, catches and tricks. In 1981, Gary brought Todd to his first Frisbee tournament in Philadelphia, where he saw the best freestyle players in the world compete. Todd was amazed, and that was a turning point for him.

Brodeur began practicing more and continued to learn many new moves and tricks. He also started playing ultimate, disc golf and overall events. He attended local tournaments and quickly made friends with many of the top players in New England. He slowly improved and started competing in 1983. After winning his first Massachusetts state tournament in 1989, he continued competing and has won over 40 state and regional titles.

The Freestyle World Championships were held in Italy in 2004, and with his partners, Paul Kenny and Larry Imperiale, Brodeur won his first world title in the co-op division and then again in Berlin, Germany, in 2006.
