AUBURN — Next week, SHAREcenter will open for distribution of educational and creative materials for the 2010-2011 school year.

The center’s site at Great Falls Center on Academy Street in Auburn will open Tuesday, and be open every Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 to 6 p.m., and on the first and second Saturdays of each month from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Topsham center, Building 376 on Republic Avenue, will be open every Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m.

The SHAREcenter’s new location at the Bates Mill complex is to be used as warehouse space only, and will not be open to the public. SHAREcenter staff will sort and store inventory in Lewiston, and restock centers in Auburn and Topsham from that inventory.

According to SHAREcenter Director Diane Doe, the nonprofit has been asked to reduce the space it uses at its Auburn location, and is looking for new donated ground floor space to store and distribute inventory. Ideally, the space would provide between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet.

SHAREcenter, which is nearly 20 years old, provides a clearinghouse for businesses and others to donate educational supplies and creative materials, which are then distributed to schools and other nonprofit programs.  According to Doe, the center’s sites in Auburn and Topsham serve about 55 schools and 30 nonprofit organizations, in addition to outreach to another 25 sites. These schools and organizations pay an annual membership fee that allows them to collect materials from the site as needed, without paying an additional charge.
