AUGUSTA — Harold E. Kilbreth Jr., 85, of Townsend Way, Topsham, died Sunday, Aug. 15, at Togus VA Hospital.

He was born in Lewiston, Aug. 7, 1925, the son of Harold E. Sr. and Mabel Matthews Kilbreth and attended the North Turner Grammar School and graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1942.

He received his B.S. degree in forestry from the University of Maine in 1951, following a tour of duty in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II, where he served in the South Pacific Theatre. He received his M.S. degree in chemistry from the University of N.H. in 1965.

He was employed as a forester with the Maine Forest Service and the Maine Park Commission. He held several math/science teaching positions in Maine and New Hampshire high schools for 30 years and retired in 1988 as the training administrator at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant in Seabrook, N.H., and moved to Topsham, where he and his wife built a new retirement home.

He was a member of the Nezinscot Lodge 101, A.F. & A.M. in Turner, the Scottish Rite Valley of Portland Consistory, the Lodge Council Chapter of the Valley of Lewiston, and the Kora Shrine Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Lewiston.

He is survived by his wife, Louise; a daughter, Gloria Jean Merrill of Addison; two sons, Walter of Kingfield and Dale of Jonesboro; a stepson, W. Douglas Marquis of Gorham; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
