Warm is cool with MDOT

POLAND — A story on Page A1 of Thursday’s edition about Pike Industries’ new warm mix asphalt process should have stated that the Maine Department of Transportation allows warm mix asphalt in practically all highway paving projects, including laying it using lower temperatures appropriate with the technology. DOT has been receptive to the use of warm mix asphalt and continues to expand the opportunities for its producers.

Company officials apologized Thursday for issuing incorrect information during a tour of the plant Wednesday, saying, “Maine DOT has a rich history of innovation and (research and development) into alternative paving methods and mix designs. This philosophy continues in the area of (warm mix asphalt). They have allowed (warm mix asphalt) substitution for (hot mix asphalt), at the asphalt supplier’s request, in parallel to their pilot project research.”
