SABATTUS — The green pond blues have returned to Sabattus Lake, where the algae is worse than it’s been in six years, less than two months after water quality was the best it had ever been.

“It looks like a great big bowl of pea soup with big globs of salt pork floating in it.” said Sabattus Lake Association President Raymond Laliberte on Tuesday.

The Lake Association blames the dramatic turnaround on the stocking of 17,000 alewives, but state officials say there is no evidence the small fish have anything to do with this year’s algae problem.
