FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington recently honored two alumni of the university for their significant contributions to UMF and Maine. Presentations were made at the annual president’s luncheon by Theodora J. Kalikow, UMF president, to Barbara W. Woodlee, president of Kennebec Valley Community College, and Craig G. Larrabee, president and chief executive officer of Jobs for Maine’s Graduates.
Woodlee, president of Kennebec Valley Community College since 1984 and member of the UMF Class of 1974, was presented with the Florence Hewey Archibald Service Award. Her significant contributions to higher education in Maine, including her efforts at both UMF and KVCC, have enriched students’ educational preparation and produced far-reaching economic benefits.
Additionally, Woodlee has served as chair of the UMF Board of Visitors for many years, guiding the group of community leaders in their role as strategic advisors to the university. The Florence Hewey Archibald Service Award was established in 1973 to honor its namesake, a member of the Class of 1927, for her service and to recognize the importance of alumni participation.
Larrabee, president and chief executive officer of Jobs for Maine’s Graduates and member of the UMF Class of 1992, was presented with the UMF Alumni Achievement Award. Seeing so-called “at-risk” students as “students of promise,” he leads the nationally-recognized organization in its important work to help Maine students succeed.
Larrabee’s recipe for educational success is that learning be “relevant, rigorous and rooted in strong relationships.” Under his leadership, JMG helps 95 percent of its students graduate from high school. Established in 1979, the UMF Alumni Achievement Award honors a graduate who has achieved distinction in his/her field, and therefore honor to the university.
In addition to the recipients of this year’s alumni awards, Madelyn Dunton Linscott, member of the Class of 1940, was recognized as the earliest class attendee at this year’s alumni reunion. Pat Carpenter, UMF director of gift planning and stewardship, and member of the UMF Class of 1982, presented her with a yellow rose in celebration of her 70th class reunion.
