LEWISTON — In response to increasing needs, Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice is seeking individuals who are interested in volunteering to help patients and their families.

The need for volunteer support continues to grow in all areas, according to Kathy Baillargeon, volunteer supervisor. Classes will be held in September and October at the AHCH Lewiston office, 15 Strawberry Ave.

A four-hour training class for grocery, visiting and office volunteers will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23.

Grocery and visiting volunteers are needed to support home-bound patients who are recovering from an illness. Grocery volunteers shop and deliver food and medications on a regular basis; visiting volunteers provide companionship and support to home-bound patients recovering from an illness or injury and those coping with chronic illness. Office volunteers assist with data entry, help with agency mailings and other special projects. Training class is required.

Training for hospice and bereavement volunteers to support terminally ill patients and their families have also been scheduled.

A 27-hour hospice training class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 28 to Oct. 26, at the Lewiston office and from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 19 to Nov. 16, at the AHCH office at 284 Main St., Wilton.

Hospice volunteers provide two to four hours each week of support for patients at home, in long-term care facilities and at the AHCH Hospice House in Auburn. Their support includes companionship, respite so that caregivers can take a break for several hours and help with errands and other needs.

A 15-hour bereavement training class will begin on Thursday, Oct. 28. Bereavement volunteers provide about two to four hours of one-on-one visiting or telephone support to families after the death of a loved one.

All volunteers are valued members of the health care team and are matched with patients in or near their communities, Baillargeon said.

Preregistration is required. For more information, contact AHCH Volunteer Services at 777-7740 or 800-482-7412, ext. 1280.
