LEWISTON — Police have arrested a man they say snatched a wallet from an elderly woman as she pushed her walker down the hallway at the Oak Park Apartments.
Daryl Roberts, 27, of Turner, was arrested Tuesday and charged with felony counts of burglary and theft. Bail was set at $2,500 cash, police said. As of Tuesday afternoon, Roberts had not made bail and was still in Androscoggin County Jail.
Roberts has a history of criminal activity, including at least two prior convictions of theft.
Police would say little Tuesday about what made Roberts a suspect in the theft of 80-year-old Edith Ryder’s wallet on Aug. 3, though one officer said they found him through some of the items that had been stolen. Police brought Roberts to the police station Tuesday to question him regarding another case and ultimately arrested him for stealing Ryder’s wallet.
Ryder, who suffered a stroke earlier this year and uses a walker, lives at the downtown Oak Park Apartments. On Aug. 3, she was in the hallway when she was approached by a seemingly friendly man who asked, “How are you doing?” He then lifted her wallet from the shelf of her walker, where she kept her phone, magazines and other belongings. The man swiftly left the building through a side exit.
Some of the wallet’s contents, including family photos, had been dumped and were recovered days later. Other items, including Ryder’s food stamp and Social Security cards, remained missing.
Ryder was relieved to learn of the arrest Tuesday.
“I can finally sleep. I’m glad they got him,” she said.
