FARMINGTON — Lawrence University blanked the University of Maine at Farmington 2-0 in non-conference men’s soccer action at steamy Prescott Field this afternoon. It was the season opener for both teams.
The Beavers (0-1) are scheduled to host the Jimmy Joe Allen Alumni Game Saturday at 3 p.m. and visit Maine Maritime on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game. The Vikings (1-0), from Appleton, Wis., are slated to travel to Clarke University Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
Bennett Wang powered Lawrence with a goal and an assist, while Paul Senner added a goal and Charlie Mann had a helper.
Despite a healthy advantage in shots for Lawrence (9-1), each squad had chances in the opening half. David Caprile stung the crossbar 26 minutes into the match and the follow off the head of Mann went wide, while Westbrook native Zach Good had Farmington’s best bid as his boot made Viking goalkeeper Steven Solomon making a diving stop with four minutes until intermission.
With half of a minute until intermission, Mann sent the ball into the box to a charging Wang. The senior dribbled through Farmington netminder Tennessee Peters and punched the ball into the empty net for a 1-0 Lawrence lead.
The Beavers had chances to even the match with Jake Constantine getting snubbed by Solomon and getting a bid blocked away before the visitors padded the lead. Senner tacked on an insurance marker at 80:51 when Wang sent the ball ahead from midfield and Senner beat a Farmington defender to the ball and fired it into the goal for the 2-0 advantage.
The Vikings finished with an 18-6 shot advantage, but 6-4 in the shots on goal category. Lawrence took 10 corner kicks to Farmington’s three.
