AUBURN — Officers and programs have been announced for the 2010-2011 year for the Woman’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County: Kirsten Larsson-Turley, president; Martha Feeley, vice president; Elizabeth Ayotte, recording secretary; Susan Smith, corresponding secretary; Marilyn Wilkinson, treasurer; Amey Feeley, assistant treasurer.

The Woman’s Literary Union will hold two meetings a month at 19 Elm St. The following programs have been scheduled: Thursday, Sept. 9, 2 p.m., Michael Graham, curator of the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village Museum, will speak on the current exhibit, “Creating Chosen Land: Our Home from 1783 to 2010”; Tuesday, Sept. 21, 7 p.m., Jody Goodwin, who writes a gardening column in the Sun Journal, will present a slide show of a trip she and her husband made to France.

Also, Thursday, Oct. 14, 2 p.m., Barbara Randall, WLU member, has researched the history of the WLU and its role in the community and will present this to the club; Tuesday, Oct. 19, 7 p.m., same as the Oct. 14 meeting; Thursday, Nov. 4, 2 p.m., Lynn Maxfield-Cole, owner of Decorating Plus, will share her expertise on adapting homes attractively to changing life styles.

Also, Tuesday, Nov. 16, 7 p.m., Fatuma Hussein, of the United Somali Woman of Maine, will speak about “Understanding our New Neighbors, the Somali Immigration”; Thursday, Feb. 10, 2 p.m., Rosy Hayden, local master gardener, will speak about growing culinary herbs in Maine; Tuesday, Feb. 15, 7 p.m., members will meet at the Atrium Gallery at USM-LA in Lewiston, for the biennial juried show of works in all media by artists in the surrounding community.

Also, Thursday, March 10, 2 p.m., local artists will display current work and give brief demonstrations; Tuesday, March 15, 7 p.m., Dan Marquis of Lewiston, who is known for his bird and nature photography, will share his photographs; Thursday, April 14, 2 p.m., Kurt Vicker, owner of the Songo River Queen, will speak about the tourist river cruise in Naples.

Also, Tuesday, April 19, 7 p.m., Bob Boggs, the education director of the Rufus Porter Museum in Bridgton, will present a program on Rufus Porter, an itinerant muralist who traveled in New England in the 19th century; Thursday, May 12, annual meeting, location and time to be announced; Tuesday, May 17, The Chapel Chix will entertain by singing gospel and “old time” classic songs.

The public is welcome at the monthly meetings and refreshments are served.

Special events are held at the Union throughout the year, which create an opportunity to share the historic building with the community, as well as raise funds to help preserve and maintain it. The first event is the Holiday Fair, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. A wide assortment of items to jump start holiday activities will be available for sale, as well as raffles.

The Winterberry Cafe will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the fair. A Holiday Tea Open House will be held Saturday, Dec. 11. The main floor of the home will be decorated for the holidays and musical entertainment will be featured. All proceeds from the open house will go toward the Scholarship Fund.

The spring children’s tea will be held Saturday, April 30, 2011. The theme will be “A Wonderland Tea” and will feature “Alice.” Girls are encouraged to bring their favorite doll along with their mom, grandmother, aunt, sister or special friend for some tea and storytelling. Reservations are required.
