DEAR SUN SPOTS: A few months ago I submitted a $35 fee along with a copy of my military form DD214 to a gentleman in charge of the veterans’ monuments in Lewiston near the bridge. It was my understanding that my name would be on the most recently erected stone. It is not.

Unfortunately, I do not have that gentleman’s name and number any longer and have been unable to find it anywhere. I am hoping Sun Spots can help me contact this person to find out if and when my name will be added. Thanks. — Paula LaRoche, Orthopl@roadrunner.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots e-mailed Paul Bernard:

“The recently added stone she mentioned was the 19th veterans memorial stone and was unveiled on Memorial Day. Her application was not received in time for the 19th stone, as it was full. We received her application for the 20th stone, which is scheduled to be unveiled this Veterans Day.

“I am the only one receiving the applications at the registered office. Names are placed on stones according to the order we receive them. Once we receive 216 names the stone is full and we move on to the next stone. According to the records, her application was received a month after the 19th stone was full.

“We deal with this often. People send in applications before Memorial Day or Veterans Day not realizing that the stone can be filled months before. We are sorry for any embarrassment.

“She could have e-mailed us after sending in her application, and she would have been told that her application was received for the 20th stone. The council does not have a volunteer to call individuals who send in applications. The applicant can, however, e-mail or write us to find out what stone they will be on.”

Paul also noted that “we have only three other LaRoche’s: Gerard on the fourth stone, Roger on the seventh stone and Walter on the 16th stone.”
