DEAR SUN SPOTS: Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin is in critical need of volunteer tutors.

Volunteers are needed for all of our programs, but we especially need tutors for English language learners in our family literacy program.

Our next tutor training workshop will be held Sept. 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Auburn Public Library. Registration is required.

Literacy is life changing. Please help. For information call 333-4785 or e-mail info@literacyvolunteersandro.org. Also check out our website at www.literacyvolunteersandro.org. Thank you! — Tahlia Chamberlain, director

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am looking for someone who can take my color slides and put them on DVDs for me. Some go back a few years, and my grandchildren would be thrilled to see their parents as children and growing up. I don’t have a computer, so I can’t look up anything myself. — No Name, Lewiston

ANSWER: Photo Finish, 550 Center St., in Auburn, 783-3354, can do that for you.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I would like to find someone who buys household furniture and odds and ends of dishes, etc. We are moving and have a lot of items cannot find room for. Thank you. — J.R.

However, if you are willing to donate those items, there are many options, including Goodwill (1035 Lisbon St., Lewiston, 782-3050), the Salvation Army (720 Main St., Lewiston, 784-2366), St. Vincent De Paul (101 Ash St., Lewiston, 782-8309) and St. Martin’s Bargain Baskets (corner of College and Bartlett streets, 786-4690.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I would like very much to get a high-quality copy of a story that was published in the Lewiston Evening Journal on Oct. 2, 1964. It was written by Roger E. Hanscom. The article was about the Upton Congregational Church. Or is it possible to buy a copy of that newspaper still? How much and where? Thank you. — Deborah Judkins, djsweet@megalink.net

ANSWER: Until recently, your options were limited to the microfiche at the library. Thanks to Google, however, you can now browse that edition through the Google archive at http://tinyurl.com/33x9u8y.
