Recently, I was driving on Pond Road in Lewiston when an impatient driver veered around me and almost clipped my driver’s side front fender while veering quickly back in front of me. He was clearly trying to express his opinion of my speed. The speed limit is 25 mph; I was driving about 27 mph.
Now, I’ve been there — late for work or an important appointment and frustrated by traffic, but I don’t expect other drivers to break the law just for my own personal convenience. If I’m late, that’s my problem, not theirs.
It would be unreasonable to drive 15 mph in a 25 mph zone, but not illegal.
Frankly, 30 mph would be safe on Pond Road, and 35 mph on Webster Street, but I don’t set those limits. In fact, I’ve never even been consulted. The only place that can deal constructively with speed limit concerns is City Hall.
This sort of thing happens all the time on in-town streets. I’m sure that many others have been on one side or another of this issue. If safety were not a concern, I’d just ignore the impatient driving, but speed limit-related road tantrums can kill.
