LEWISTON — Harry Jones, 89, a resident of St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion, formerly of Pettengill St. in Lewiston, died on Sunday, Sept. 5, after a long illness.

He was born on Aug. 31, 1921 in Taunton, Mass., the son of Harry and Primrose (Charnley) Jones. While he spent his early years in Taunton, he later moved to Auburn. He attended a military prep school in Illinois and later graduated from Edward Little High School. During World War II, he served four years with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater. He attended Bates College and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono.

He had a long career teaching chemistry and physics at Edward Little High School. He also served as Edward Little’s swim coach and band director for many years. Besides teaching, he taught swimming at the YMCA and led Auburn’s Police Athletic League for many summers. Upon retirement in the early 1980s, Harry enjoyed woodworking, traveling, and spending winters in Hilton Head, S.C.

Survivors include two sons, Mark Jones of Durham, N.C., and Peter Jones of Portsmouth, N.H.; two daughters, Nancy A. Marshall, and her husband, Peter, of Kennebunk, and Susan Jones of Wells; and four grandchildren, Matthew and Benjamin Jones, and Kate and Maxwell Marshall.

He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Jones; and by two daughters, Kathleen Jones and Celeste Hunt.
