JAY — Local Cub Scout Pack 599 Webelos I Cub Master Ricky Merrill, advancement Chair Leader Sarah Roy and pack committee Chair Anne Schwab recently took their den of Webelos I scouts to Camp Hinds Webelos Resident Camp on Panther Pond in Raymond.
The camp is sponsored by the Pine Tree Council and Boy Scouts of America. Attending the camp were Jordan Buzzell, Dylan Guay, Orion Schwab and Preston Townsend.
The Webelos program is for fourth- and fifth-grade Cub Scouts transitioning to Boy Scouts. The two-year program is designed to teach the boys how to become First Class Boy Scouts. There are 20 activity badges and advancements that must be earned and are designed to teach the boys practical life skills while having fun and staying safe.
This year’s camp theme was “A Pirate’s Life Aboard the Ghost Ship Hinds.” The staff dressed and acted like pirates and the theme carried into the activities that the boys completed such as shipbuilding, walking the plank and a pirate hunt where boys earned gold coins for each pirate found. The coins were later turned in for prizes.
The boys earned six activity badges including aquanaut, craftsman, geologist naturalist, outdoorsman and readyman, and six belt loops for archery, BB gun, flag football, geology, kickball and swimming.
Pack 599 is open to Jay, Fayette, Livermore and Livermore Falls residents. Boys from the first to the sixth grade are encouraged to come check out the program and meet the staff at the open house and registration from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the St. Rose Parish Hall, Main Street.
