AUBURN — Callers to Auburn Hall on Thursday heard a lot of busy signals for most of the day.

City officials said their telephones went dead at about 11 a.m. Thursday because of an equipment failure. Technicians had repaired the problem by 4 p.m.

“We really apologize for the inconvenience,” City Manager Glenn Aho said. “We’ve already challenged our customers so much because we do not staff the information desk. We rely on our telephone communication so much, this just adds insult to injury.”

Technicians from Oxford Networks and Central Maine Communications were trying to repair the problems.

Mike Thompkins, vice president of operations for Oxford Networks, said the problem appeared to be an equipment issue in Auburn Hall and not his company’s network. No other Oxford Networks customers were affected.
