AUGUSTA — The State of Maine is looking for the following veterans: Purple Heart recipients, Prisoners of War or the families of those who died during World War II, Korea and Vietnam wars. The State has established a recognition program to honor the service and sacrifice of its veterans who were wounded, POWs or died in support of combat operations since the beginning of World War II.

Information on the program can be found on the Bureau of Veterans’ Services website at www.maine.gov/dvem/bvs/ and by clicking on the Maine Heroes button on the left of the page. Information is also available by calling the Bureau’s central office in Augusta at 626-4464.

The Bureau, or as it is better known, Maine Veterans’ Services, conducts periodic presentation ceremonies around Maine to provide an opportunity for the family and friends of veterans to attend a local recognition ceremony to see their loved one recognized for their military service.

Representatives Sheryl Briggs and Matt Peterson plan to have another ceremony in the River Valley area at noon Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Post 24 Rumford American Legion Hall to honor such recipients.

“We hope we have another quick turnaround of responses as many of our World War II veterans are passing on so we want to recognize them as soon as possible,” said Briggs.
