FARMINGTON — The Mt. Blue High School football team went back to the basics, and it paid dividends in a Pine Tree Conference game at Caldwell Field on Friday.
Mt. Blue quarterback Jordan Whitney threw a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter and the Cougars defense proved to be steadfast in a 19-0 win against Oxford Hills.
The Cougars (2-0) utilized its ball-control offense in the half to eat up seven minutes to keep it away from the Vikings. Whitney (13 of 23 for 136 yards) directed the opening drive for a score by connecting with Ethan Kyes, who broke a tackle and sprinted 21 yards for a TD. In the fourth quarter, Cam Sennick caught a 19-yard TD pass. The plays were both on fourth down and 12 and 9 yards respectively.
“It was sloppy in the beginning,” Mt. Blue assistant coach Peter Franchetti said. “The kids focus was up and down, which might have been because of the occasion. We took a couple gambles and they paid off, but penalties hurt us with two TDs being called back.”
Mt. Blue head coach Gary Parlin reached 100 career wins. The Cougars had 36 plays in the second half to the Vikings’ 16.
“We struggled early on,” said Sennick, a two-way standout. “But the coach talked to us at halftime and we settled down and made some plays. It feels really good now. It has been a long time since a Mt. Blue team has been 2-0.”
Oxford Hills (0-2) relied on the passing of QB Logan Sanborn (5 of 11 for 55 yards) to favorite receiver Dan Taylor. Chris Priest gained 30 of the teams 69 rushing yards.
“We made some adjustments in the second half,” Oxford Hills coach Nate Danforth said. “We changed blocking schemes, but credit Mt. Blue inside because we couldn’t move them. We had get our passing game going, but we’ll need to go back to the drawing board.”
The Cougars were led by Izaiha Tracy (101 yards, 15 rushes), who scored a 38-yard TD in the second quarter.
