With regard to having to cancel school due to high temperatures — here’s a novel concept: Don’t start the school year until the day after Labor Day.

Doing that would solve two problems: It would avoid the heat of August and would help reduce budget deficits that seem to be prevalent in many communities.

I am sure many readers will remember when the day after Labor Day marked the beginning of the school year. Why the first day of school has gotten earlier is beyond me. It has been suggested that was done in an attempt to counter excessive snow days.

What is wrong with making up the days in June, instead of second-guessing how many days might have to be canceled due to snow?
