RUMFORD — Tensions are usually pretty high when Mountain Valley and Dirigo square off in any athletic endeavor.

Monday, it was Dirigo that dominated in the latest meeting between the two rivals on the soccer pitch.

Junior Cody St. Germain scored two goals to lead Dirigo to an emphatic 5-1 win over Mountain Valley in the rain at Chet Bulger Field.

There was plenty of energy and fight in both teams, and they each had trouble trouble with balls skipping off the turf due to wet conditions.

The Cougars (3-1) went ahead 2-0 on goals by St. Germain and Bryan Volkernick in the first half and never looked back. The Cougars controlled the midfield play and dictated the tempo.

“We are playing well as a team,” Dirigo coach Jack Rioux said.  “The kids are organized in the back and Jeremy Briggs has stepped up to become a leader on defense. This game was another strong performance.”

St. Germain caught a feed from Alex Milledge at 22:52 and the Cougars stayed on the offensive. Volkernick, a freshman, lined up for a direct kick and lofted an arching floater over Falcons goalie David Weiger (nine saves) and the ball settled in the far corner of the net.

The Falcons (0-4) backpedaled throughout the first half, keeping defenders Kyle Gauvin and Eric Billings busy. An inability to generate any offense, save for a quality shot by Austin Glover on goalie Caleb Turner (four saves), compounded the situation.

“We have a very young team,” Mountain Valley coach Jarrod Dumas said. “We have only seven upperclassmen. The rest are sophomores and freshman, so we have the older guys playing back. It’s sacrificing offense for defense, which didn’t work out today. We are just not ready at this point to make a transition to offense”

Dirigo has switched to a two-person front line and the Falcons keyed on Hunter Ross and Chad Snowman. This opened the middle up for St. Germain, T.J. Frost, Milledge and Volkernick.

St. Germain and Milledge each scored in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

“It is always intense,” St. Germain said. “This is a rivalry game and we came up here and tied (3-3) last year, so this feels really good.”

Mountain Valley’s Andrew Phelps scored late in the game on Dirigo’s second keeper of the game, Michael Chow, who finished with five saves.
