GREENE — Members of the Greene Historical Society will meet on Thursday, Sept. 23, at the historical society in the Old Town Hall, 98 Main St. The guest speaker will be Charles Plummer, an Auburn resident whose specialty is portraying Civil War personalities.

Plummer has performed for numerous historical societies, civic organizations and museums as far south as Alexander, Va. In addition to General Joshua Chamberlain, he portrays Generals Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Stonewall Jackson, James Longstreet and Col. John S. Mosbey.

Chamberlain, a Bowdoin College graduate, was a professor at the college before he accepted an appointment as Lt. Colonel with the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment which was mustered into service in the summer of 1862. He led the final assault on Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia and was accorded the honor of accepting the surrender of that army at Appomattox Court House on April 12, 1865.

After the war he returned to Maine and served as governor from 1867 to 1871 and president of Bowdoin College from 1871 to 1883. Severely wounded at Petersburg on June 18, 1864, he died as a result of that wound on February 24, 1914 at Portland. He was laid to rest on Feb. 27, in Pine Grove Cemetery at Brunswick.

The program will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served after the program.
