PARIS — A 41-year-old man remained behind bars Thursday evening, charged with nicking a neighbor’s knickers.

Ronald Clifford Ryder Jr. of Market Square in Paris was charged with burglary and theft. An officer at the Oxford County Jail said he would need to pay $200 bail and secure a pretrial bail contract before his release.

Chief David Verrier of the Paris Police Department said the theft occurred  Tuesday. A neighbor reported three pairs of underwear missing. During the interview, Ryder admitted to using a credit card to open the door of a neighboring apartment and taking the undergarments. He was arrested at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday by officer Timothy Gamache.

Verrier said Ryder recently moved to the area from Connecticut. He said he did not know whether the underwear was a man’s or a woman’s, and that Ryder was not asked why he took the underwear.
