INDUSTRY – Clearwater Food Pantry’s new building on West Mills Road is nearing completion, with moving day set for Saturday, Sept. 25.

Siding was being put on the building Thursday, Nancy Teel, special project coordinator for Western Maine Community Action, said. The building is energy-efficient.

“The new home has been designed with both worker and consumer comfort in mind,” she said. “It is a bright, clean, safe, well-lighted space with room to grow.”

A Community Volunteer Day is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 25. Lunch will be provided. Help is needed to move the shelving, food, freezers and refrigerators that day.

Volunteers from the University of Maine at Farmington, employees of Western Maine Community Action, members of the Shorey Chapel, and many community members are expected to participate as part of September’s Month of Caring, Teel said.

An open house is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 14, with snacks and beverages provided by the Shorey Chapel.

Making this much-needed project a reality is a fine example of how collaboration works so well in Greater Franklin County, Teel said.

The Clearwater Ministries Board of Directors, Industry selectmen and Western Maine Community Action obtained professional assessments of the old fire station that has served as the Clearwater Food Pantry and deemed it unhealthy.

The new building has been placed next to the old building on the same property. Together, the planning group designed the structure, selected a contractor, established in-kind matches to offset the cost of the project and oversaw various aspects of the building process, Teel said.

Federal disaster funds received as a result of severe storms and flooding in the spring of 2008 helped pay for the construction. The pantry was directly impacted by the storms, Teel said.

The Maine Community Action Association has been administering the funds, with the Western Maine agency helping those throughout Franklin County.
