NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen on Thursday unanimously approved holding a special town meeting Oct. 7 to amend zoning regulations that would allow the historic Gingerbread House to be moved.

“We’re essentially ready to go,” said Pat Shearman, who is heading up the volunteer committee trying to move the house farther up Main Street. She said the move will happen if the zoning change is approved.

Town officials learned last week that the town shoreland zoning ordinance requires 40,000 square feet for a building site, not 10,000 square feet like the building code and comprehensive plan do.

Town Manager David Holt told the board that the proposed Gingerbread House lot is about 11,000 to 12,000 square feet. The lot is comprised of three parcels owned by the town, the Department of Transportation and the Gingerbread House owner.

“I think this is the solution,” Holt told the board.

Shearman said the group can move forward with restoration project as soon as they have voter permission and the house is on its new foundation near Butters Park. She said it will take an hour to move the three-story, 80- by 20-foot house the short distance from the intersection of Pikes Hill Road.

The town meeting is at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at the municipal building on Danforth Street.
