FAYETTE — At 10:34 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, my father, Allan Clyde Poland finished his journey on this rock after 78 laps around the sun. He was a good friend, father and mentor.

Allan was born on May 20, 1932, in Livermore Falls to Charles Clyde Poland and Nancy Livermore Poland, one of four brothers, Arnold, Richard and Robert, who died as an infant.

He was educated in the Livermore Falls school system and graduated from the Maine State Teachers’ College, now the University of Maine at Farmington. He had a master’s degree in geography from the University of Maine at Orono.

Allan and my mother taught school in the Dominican Republic from 1955 until 1960. After a short stay in Jackman, we moved to North Anson, where he was a teacher, principal and administrator from 1963 until his retirement in 1985, whereupon he moved to his home in Fayette, where he resided until his passing at home.

Allan was truly a great teacher and took much pride in helping a multitude of children become better people. He was a Mason, a member of Lodge 28, AF&AM, North Anson. He was very active in scouting, achieving the Order of the Arrow from the Pine Tree Council.

He was a certified NRA rifle instructor at Camp Hines. He was a motorcyclist and motorsports enthusiast and enjoyed collecting firearms as a lifetime member of the NRA. He restored The Farm on Tranquility Hill in Fayette by himself and was a self-taught and accomplished carpenter, plumber, electrician and mechanic. He could fix anything.

Allan is survived by his brothers and his sons, Matthew Livermore Poland, John Christopher Poland and Michael Allan Poland; his grandsons, Scott, Shaun, Christopher, John and Aaron; his grandchildren’s mothers, Kit Poland, Debbie Poland and Denise Hamilton; and his friend, partner and loving wife, Anne Elliott Poland.

We would like to express our appreciation to the people at Maine General HealthReach Hospice, who provided the support for him to spend his final days at home. My father was a truly great person who touched many lives and that legacy will last for many lifetimes. A service for him will be held in the spring, details of which will be forth coming.
