The defending Class C football champions might be a largely new cast of characters, but Dirigo showed Friday night that it still flaunts plenty of depth and firepower.
Six different Cougars scored a touchdown as Dirigo bounced back from its first loss in 13 games with a 48-0 shutout of Old Orchard Beach at Joe Regina Field.
Spencer Ross was the repeat offender for Dirigo (2-1). Ross went 28 yards with a reception from Ben Holmes and also scored on a 5-yard run. He amassed 116 all-purpose yards in the first half alone.
Dirigo led only 6-0 in the first quarter before Holmes’ pass to Ross, followed by Ross’ rush for the two-point conversion, opened the floodgates.
It was 28-0 at the half. The Cougars applied the finishing touches early in the third quarter when Jake Dowland blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown.
Justin Jasper scored from 27 yards and Justin Dowland had a 10-yard scamper to the end zone for the Cougars. Nick Young and Holmes each chipped in a short TD rush.
Dirigo dropped its first game since the 2008 playoffs last weekend, 40-8 at home against Winthrop.
