100 years ago, 1910

It is understood that at the annual meeting of the stockholders of the Bates Manufacturing Co. to be held in Lewiston Wednesday, definite plans will be made toward the erection of a new mill on the old Pingree lot, so-called, and which has recently been purchased from the Franklin Company, by the Bates Mfg. Co. This is a large lot of land and its location is ideal for the Bates Mfg. Co.

50 years ago, 1960

The Lewiston Public Works Department intends to be ready to roll when the snow starts falling again.

Mechanics are overhauling one of the department’s two big snow loaders and are getting the various plowing units in tip-top shape for the heavy work that is sure to come with winter. Work on the plows is being done when time permits, reports PWD Director George J. Maher.

Lewiston has 18 road plows and seven sidewalk plows that are put into service during the winter months.

25 years ago, 1985

GREENE — At its first meeting ever Thursday night, a self-described nonpolitical action group launched a drive to get six questions relating to the banning or restricting of alcohol sales in town placed on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Sharon Jahnke, who led the push to form the Greene Civic Action Committee and was elected its chairwoman, proposed that a petition drive be initiated for the purpose of placing six referendum questions on the Election Day ballot.
