HEBRON — The Hebron Historical Society’s program on Aug. 24 featured forester Fred Huntress of Poland speaking on his knowledge of big trees. A local man all his life, Huntress described how he first became interested in forestry while at the University of Maine and how that initial interest led to a career and interest in forestry and a particular interest in large trees ever since.
A private forester, Huntress displayed pictures he has taken over the years and spoke of various large trees around Maine, some of which are state record holders for their size. Following the presentation, Huntress answered many questions and entertained the crowd with his tongue-in-cheek humor.
The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the Hebron Town Office. The program will following a brief business meeting, and will feature Buckfield’s Daniel Smith, who will speak on the history of stone walls and on his experience in building them. The public is invited.
